In a key turning point for Advocates for Youth’s abortion campaign, we rebranded. I created the new logo and branding.

Problem

After ten plus years of running the highly successful 1 in 3 campaign, that brought awareness to the statistic of women who have had an abortion, Advocates for Youth needed to rebrand the campaign for several reasons. Perhaps most pertinent, was the statistic changing to 1 in 4 — likely due to increased access to contraception and other family planning measures — and the team realized a changing statistic couldn’t be the name of the campaign. Additionally, our perception of who experiences pregnancy had expanded in the last ten years. The previous campaign consistently referenced women who became pregnant and had abortions, ignoring the lived experiences of trans and non binary folks who also became pregnant and needed abortions.

Solution

We spent a considerable amount of time brainstorming the name of the rebranded campaign and landed on Abortion Out Loud. The name of the cohort of young people advocating on behalf of the campaign became Youth Abortion Support Collective or YouthASC. I set to work researching our peers’ branding in the field and developing logo iterations for stakeholders to review. I created a logo for Abortion Out Loud that was reminiscent of Advocates’ logo, to draw a visual parallel between the two brands. For YouthASC, I incorporated imagery of two hands clasped to represent the support the collective offers and advocates for.
